Wiles Eye Center offers the following services at our Kansas City location:

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are one of the most common age-related vision conditions. This clouding of the eye’s natural lens causes blurry vision, increased glare, changes in color vision and other symptoms. The only way to treat cataracts is to surgically remove the eye’s natural lens and replace it with an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most routine procedures performed in the United States today.

IOLs

Wiles Eye Center is pleased to offer patients a wide range of IOL options, including advanced IOLs that restore vision at multiple distances. We understand that no two patients are exactly alike, so we use sophisticated Optiwave Refractive Analysis technology to ensure each patient receives the best IOL for his or her unique visual needs.

Macular Degeneration Treatment

Macular degeneration is a disease that progressively damages the macula, the portion of the retina responsible for clear central and detail vision. Studies show that taking nutritional supplements with certain key antioxidants may slow the progression of the less serious type of the disease. For the more serious type of macular degeneration, laser treatment or injections of special drugs into the eye are recommended.

Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve, which sends information from the eye to the brain. It occurs when the eye’s natural drainage system becomes compromised and fluid no longer drains normally from the eye. As a result, the pressure inside the eye builds up and presses on the optic nerve. Glaucoma treatments are designed to either reduce the amount of fluid the eye makes, or improve the way fluid exits the eye. Sometimes our team recommends minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), which involves placing a tiny stent called an iStent in the eye to create another drainage pathway from the eye to increase fluid flow.

Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye disease occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears to stay comfortably lubricated, or if there is an imbalance between the layers of the tear film. Symptoms include burning, tearing, sensitivity to light and blurry vision.

Sometimes lifestyle changes such as eating more foods with omega-3 fatty acids, limiting screen time and using a humidifier can help improve symptoms. If not, prescription eye drops or in-office treatments may be recommended to help restore adequate moisture to the surface of the eyes.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, minimizes signs of aging around the upper and lower eyelids. By removing excess skin and fat and tightening loose skin and muscles, the surgery can improve the appearance of droopy or saggy upper eyelids and puffy or wrinkled lower eyelids. In patients where excess eyelid skin spills over the lashline and obscures the line of sight, eyelid surgery can remove the obstruction for a clearer visual field.

Eye Exams

Comprehensive dilated eye exams are an essential part of maintaining healthy eyes. Regular exams allow eye doctors the opportunity to detect eye problems in their early stages, when they are more easily treatable with minimally invasive means. Adults should plan to have exams every one to three years, depending on their age and eye health.

LASIK

LASIK is a form of laser eye surgery designed for individuals who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. The procedure carefully reshapes the curvature of the cornea to help light entering the eye focus on the retina. This largely reduces or even eliminates dependence on glasses/contact lenses. LASIK surgery takes only a few minutes per eye and the recovery is very short.
