Now is the perfect time to have your child’s eyes examined before school starts. Around the age of two is when children need to have their first eye exam. Don’t let poor vision interfere with activities or good grades. Call us to schedule an appointment before school is back in session.

Routine eye exams play a critical role in preventative care for vision and overall eye health. Many patients, especially children, do not even know they suffer from visual or other eye-related problems because often times those issues do not present symptoms. For this reason, it is so important to have eyes checked on a regular basis. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.

Several factors are taken into consideration by the eye doctor during the exam:
Patient history
Visual acuity (the eye chart with letters to gauge how well the patient sees)
Preliminary tests (these tests may include depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral or side vision and the way the pupils respond to light).
Keratometry (this test measures the curvature of the cornea, the clear outer surface of the eye).
Refraction (determines the appropriate lens power needed to compensate for any visual error such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism).
Eye Focusing, Eye Teaming and Eye Movement Testing (This testing will look for problems that keep eyes from focusing effectively or make using both eyes together difficult).
Eye Health Evaluation (Tonometry measures eye pressure. Elevated pressure in the eye indicates an increased risk for glaucoma).

At Wiles Eye Center, we specialize in routine eye exams. We staff four doctors: two ophthalmologists and two optometrists who are experienced in examining children.

Stephen Wiles, M.D., F.A.C.S. is the founder and president of Wiles Eye Center. Wiles has been helping to restore and preserve vision in the field of ophthalmology for more than 25 years and practices at both our Kansas City eye clinic and our St. Joseph eye clinic.

Dr. Rachel Tischinski, O.D. has a very personable approach to patient care, and it is what sets her apart from any other optometrist. She has more than 12 years of experience and has been a member of the Wiles Eye Center team for 10 years. Dr. Rachel travels between our Kansas City eye clinic and our St. Joseph eye clinic.

Dr. Erin Gilliland, M.D. is a well-recognized ophthalmologist at Wiles Eye Center. Gilliland has helped numerous patients enhance their visual acuity while reducing their dependence on glasses and practices at our St. Joseph eye clinic.

Dr. Michael Klein, O.D., M.S. is a recent addition to our team of exceptional doctors and is wholly dedicated to our patient care philosophy of providing patients with healthy eyes and better vision. Klein travels to our Kansas City eye clinic and our St. Joseph eye clinic.
